Digital Citizenship | Student social media use

Are you monitoring your child’s use of social media?

We are aware that students in our school are continuing to access the social media site AskFM. As we have indicated in previous communications with parents, this is an unfiltered, unmonitored site/app where individuals can post images and texts anonymously. This site is highly filled with sexual, violent and drug related language. It is a place where students can be subjected to or involved in bullying type behaviors. Fallout from students’ access to this site continues to filter into the school. We would again ask that all parents support us by ensuring that their children do not participate in this site.

As children and teens start to learn who they are as individuals, they often learn from mistakes or behaviours that can be harmless and part of growing up. However when these mistakes are public online they can harm a persons future reputation.  Employers, universities, and other organizations will now look to social media as a way to find out more about potential employees/students.  Understanding your digital reputation is a very important part of being a good digital citizen.  After watching this week’s video please have a conversation with your child/ren about what they are posting on social media.  In 10 or 15 years would what they are posting be something that they would want their future employers or post secondary admissions personal want to see?

“Let me take a selfie” is often heard in pop culture as the selfie has become a cultural phenomena.  The video this week speaks about our rights and responsibilities when it comes to taking and sharing digital images of ourselves and others.  Please talk to your child about getting into the habit of asking permission prior to taking and/or posting photos of others as well as advocating for themselves when others are taking pictures of them.

Are your child’s online interactions responsible, respectful, and create value in their digital world?  It is important that we are having ongoing conversations with our children about how they are interacting with others online.  Watch the below video and talk to your child about their online interactions:  What strategies do they have for building positive online relationships?  Do they understand their responsibilities when interacting online?  Do they know how to manage their social media accounts so that they have their privacy protected?  Do they stop, think, and question what they are posting before adding content? Are they able to identify cyberbullying and take steps to help victims of cyberbullying?

A Conversation with the Internet

inform | Digital Citizenship series part 2

When the word digital citizenship is used, many of us automatically think of it as a negative thing.  We think of all the troubles that are associated with internet use such as cyber bullying, hacking, and poor decisions made on social media.  However digital citizenship is in fact a very positive concept on how we conduct ourselves online.
Watch the below video and have a conversation with your child/ren about how they see their digital self when online.  Ask them: How do you respectfully and responsibly create and manage a positive personal digital presence? and What would other people think of you if they only knew you from your online presence?
